IPS is dedicated to helping planetarium professionals and those interested in developing planetariums gain the knowledge and backgrounds necessary to manage a professional operation.

The Professional Skills of the “Planetarian” (PDF)

Sponsoring a conference once every two years is our most important professional development offering. The conferences bring together planetarians from around the world for several days of workshops, paper sessions, invited guest lectures, and fellowship. Networking, learning about new products and programs, and making friendships are often cited as benefits by those attending.

Learn more on the conference overview page.

Educational Video Conferences

Zoominar Since 2017 the IPS affiliate Pacific Planetarium Association (PPA) has organized and hosted Planetarians' Web Seminars (PWS) that are Zoom video conferences held nearly monthly. In 2018 Great Lakes Planetarium Association (GLPA) became a co-sponsor. All the seminars have been recorded and archived. You may find links to them at, and learn about upcoming web seminars at

Professional Development Exchange

The IPS supports three professional development initiatives that allow members to travel to planetariums in another country, where they teach, lecture, and learn techniques used by their colleagues. Selection is competitive.
