Advertising Guidelines and RatesEffective January 1, 2010 - current date
Planetarian is the Journal of the International Planetarium Society (IPS) containing resource and review articles. It serves as an informational and educational forum for its members and is published on a quarterly basis.
Membership in IPS is currently over 600 worldwide. Our readers include those involved in planetarium administration and show production: presenters, lecturers, artists, musicians, photographers, teachers, technicians, and writers, as well as vendors and others who do business with planetariums. Planetarian is distributed to all IPS members around the world as a benefit of membership.
Planetarian is distributed quarterly during the solstice and equinox months with the following deadlines for submission of advertising and copy:
Advertisements are best submitted to the Editor as high-resolution digital files. Accepted file types are pdf (first choice), tif, and jpg, and they must be readable on a Windows-based computer. Best results are obtained with press quality pdf files and uncompressed CMYK tif files with a minimum resolution of 300 pixels per inch. Jpeg files are compressed by their nature and care must be given to keep the image detailed enough to print well. Please err on the side of quality rather than compression.
NOTE: The editor only receives the ads. Contracts are handled through Dale Smith, the advertising coordinator, and Ann Bragg, IPS treasurer, receives the payments. See contact information below.
Inquire well in advance for special needs and possible exceptions.
Planetarian Ad Rate Table
(Rates placed into effect 1 January, 2010. Table modified 10/11/2017 to eliminate two-color rates, which are no longer available.)
Advertising Rate Details
Black & White Advertisements: Note that since Planetarian is printed in full color, ads to be run in black and white must be submitted in black and white to the Editor.
Prices are subject to change without notice.
To receive the significant discount from 4-time insertions, advertisers must have a pre-paid contract on file with the IPS. The four issues in which the ad is inserted are consecutive. Contact the Advertising Coordinator listed below to arrange a contract. Centerfolds are not eligible for the discount.
Cover and Centerfold Advertising
A separate policy on assigning cover and centerfold advertising exists. If you care considering these sites, please see complete policy for cover and centerfold advertising.
Advertisers will be billed for each issue within 30 days of the advertising deadlines listed above. New advertising must be prepaid until credit is established. Checks should be made payable to the International Planetarium Society and sent to the IPS Treasurer at the address listed below. Payments made by wire transfer require an additional $35 fee. Contact the Advertising Coordinator or Treasurer for IPS bank routing information.
Direct Mailing Options
In addition to advertising in Planetarian, you may contact our membership directly. Contact the IPS Treasurer for format information and more details.
Advertisers also may place CD/DVD inserts in Planetarian mailings. The disk(s) must be provided in paper sleeves and must include the statement "Commercial Insert to Planetarian," either printed on the CD/DVD itself or on the paper sleeve. Advertisers should submit a sample disk and sleeve to the chair of the IPS Publications Committee well in advance of the standard deadline to ensure it meets mailing requirements. The cost per insert is $1,875 per issue, plus sleeved disks.
Contact the advertising coordinator for other insert options.
We reserve the right to return advertising materials that we deem inappropriate for the journal. Advertisers must be specifically related to planetariums.
You may purchase back issues of Planetarian from the editor.
