IPS2014 Pre-Conference Hong Kong Day Tour

This one-day tour provides an opportunity for the IPS conference delegates to visit places of scientific interest in Hong Kong.

Brief introduction of Tour:

The tour begins with a visit to the Hong Kong Science Park, where the Applied Laboratory for Interactive Visualisation and Embodiment (AliVE) is located. Filled with numerous advanced immersive digital visualization systems, AliVE is a showcase experimental media laboratory that offers unique opportunities for education, research, production, exhibition, and commercialisation.

You will travel to the picturesque Sai Kung Peninsula, often referred to as the "back garden of Hong Kong". Being rich and unique in geological features, this area was designated as the Hong Kong Geopark in 2009. You can take a stroll at the East Dam of the High Island Reservoir to see the spectacular hexagonal volcanic rock columns, one of the largest geological formations of this kind in the world. Also located amidst the High Island Reservoir area is the Astropark - a theme park with stargazing facilities. It features models and replicas of ancient Chinese astronomical instruments and set up for sky observation activities.

The tour will not be complete without a stop at Sai Kung downtown. The Sai Kung Seafood Street is a great place to savour local seafood dishes which is famous in this fishing town.

  • 1. The tour is free of charge and Hong Kong Space Museum will arrange and provide coaches and guides.
  • 2. Delegates will have to cover for their transportation to and from Hong Kong airport/terminal to hotel, and their meals during the tour.
  • 3. Hong Kong Space Museum will provide hotel recommendations for direct booking by delegates.
  • 4. The tour will be cancelled if Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above is hoisted or Red Rainstorm Signal / Black Rainstorm Signal is in force.
  • 5. If the above mentioned warning signal is lowered 3 hours or more before the tour commences, the tour will proceed as scheduled.

IPS 2014 Pre-Conference Special Event

IPS-Macao International Fulldome Festival 2014:

June 18-20, 2014

The IPS-MIFF 2014 is the first Fulldome Festival fully supported by IPS and hosted in the first 8k 3D fulldome planetarium theatre. This Festival adjudication process is a pre-conference event of the IPS 2014 Conference in Beijing. An international line-up of about 30 digital fulldome shows will be shown and competing for prestigious awards during the Festival.

A selection of the festival shows will be shown to the public in Macao from 21 June and in Beijing from 28 June to 31 July 2014.

Announcement about Submission of Videos

Dear all,

To ensure the vendor demonstration session for the IPS2014 to go smoothly and guarantee the vendors’ interests to the utmost, we sincerely call for the submission of the relevant movies or videos to be played during the conference. The video clips will be made according to the order in which the hard drives are submitted.

Submission Deadline: March 15th, 2014.

Please cover all the delivery costs and customs charges that may arise during transport.

Video Resolution: 4096 px * 4096 px

Video Format: png or jpg files, sequence of frames

Audio Format: 3(2.1) or 6(5.1) independent wav or aiff files with separate tracks

Digital Space Theater Upgraded to 3D-Dome Theater

In order to better support IPS2014 Conference, some pavilions and theaters of Beijing Planetarium are under upgrade, among which, the previous Digital Space Theatre has been renamed 3D-Dome Theater after a series of upgrades and redecoration.

The 3D-Dome Theater can hold 200 people per show. It is the first three-dimensional domed theater in mainland China, equipped with high-resolution and high-brightness projectors and a top-notch digital planetarium system. The dome creates a vivid and realistic atmosphere in which the high-definition virtual trip creates a feeling of immersion in the vast universe. You’ll have a new impression of the universe.

The astronomical movies now shown in the 3D-Dome Theater include Interstellar and Black Holes, and etc. The movies are informative and cater to primary and middle school students of all ages.

IPS2014 pre-conference and vendor forum were held in Beijing Planetarium, on 24-27 May, 2013. President of IPS Thomas Kraupe, IPS2012 Host Jon Elvert were present at the meeting, together with delegates of vendors by invitation, and local organizing committee.

During the four-day conference, IPS2014 Host—Dr Jin Zhu reported about conference logistics and program, which involves basic information, venues, language solutions, official websites, hotel accommodation, catering, transportation, tours, and agenda of IPS2014…, followed by all quarters’ representative sharing ideas adequately and on-site visit. During on-site visit accompanied with Mr. Jon Elvert and Dr Jin Zhu, Mr. Thomas Kraupe, interviewed by BTV-Beijing television, said IPS 2014 conference will be an expecting gathering for both astronomers and vendors all around the world.

All preparations for IPS2014 conference flow smoothly in the efforts of organizing committee, which are to provide a warm welcome to all attendees of IPS2014 conference.

Beijing Planetarium is Ready for IPS2014

The 20th IPS conference was held at Planetarium Science Center, Library of Alexandria, Egypt, during the period 26-30 June 2010.

As the bidder for the 22nd IPS conference, Beijing Planetarium sent a delegation to attend the event. Dr. Jin Zhu, the director of Beijing Planetarium, made a presentation in the conference, and invited all IPS members to come to Beijing for IPS 2014.

The other two bids are from Rio de Janeiro and Vancouver. The winner will be announced in the IPS council meeting in July 2011.
