History of the Planetarium Working Group

The formation of a History of the Planetarium Working Group in IPS is currently underway. The main goal of this working group is to promote research and outreach in history of planetariums, as well as the preservation and accessibility of source materials for this field.

Cultural Astronomy Shorts

The 'Imiloa Science Center and the Thirty Meter Telescope are collaborating on a project to produce short planetarium productions featuring the the sky stories and indigenous sky knowledge in TMT partner countries. Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Hawaian, Native American, and First Nations Canadian sky story are being produced.

Pilikula Fulldome Festival and Planetarium Conference

Under the leadership of Dr. K V Rao, a very successful planetarium conference was held in Mangalore, India. This conference brought together much of the Indian Planetarium Community. Speakers included the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) A S Kiran Kumar and IPS President Mark SubbaRao. One exciting development from the conference was the consensus to start an Indian Planetarium Association to be affiliated with the IPS. Watch for more news in an upcoming newsletter.

A Podcast Episode on Alien Life

Seth Shostak directs the search for extraterrestrials at the SETI Institute in California. For much of his career, Seth conducted radio astronomy research on galaxies, and has published approximately fifty papers in professional journals. He also founded and ran a company producing computer animation for TV. Seth has written on various topics in astronomy, technology, film and television. His first popular book, “Sharing the Universe: Perspectives on Extraterrestrial Life” appeared in 1998. His most recent book is “Confessions of an Alien Hunter” (2009).
