April is the month to celebrate astronomy and dark skies

Two major international events of interest to planetarians take place in April.

First is International Dark Sky Week, 15-21 April, sponsored by the International Dark Sky Association. This year's theme is Turn on the Night.

The IDA has a number of resources available through their website at

Astronomy Day logo

The IDSW is scheduled to coincide with the spring observation of Astronomy Day, sponsored by the Astronomical League. Astronomy Day is so important that it is celebrated twice each year, one in the spring and again in the fall.

This year's dates are 21 April  and 13 October.

Local astronomical societies, planetariums, museums, and observatories will be sponsoring public viewing sessions, presentations, workshops, and other activities to increase public awareness about astronomy and our wonderful universe.
