|IPS 2016 Conference Venue|
Poland is one of Europe’s larger countries, conveniently situated in the middle of the continent – at the crossroads of important transit routes and with good access to the Baltic Sea. These conditions enhance the development of Poland’s economy, trade and all sorts of international relations.
With eleven centuries of history behind it, Poland has a very rich cultural heritage which goes back to the days when the amber route ran through its lands. Copernicus’ medieval city of Torun, the stunning Salt Mine in Wieliczka and the momentous Gdansk shipyard are only the beginning of the long list of Polish highlights. Poland is a country of mixed cultures and numerous attractions. One can find everything here: alpine style landscape, wide beaches, clean lakes, deep forests and world-class historic monuments. Even the most demanding guests will be pleasantly surprised.
Warsaw has everything that a modern European capital has to offer: a dynamic and stable business environment, historic and modern meeting facilities, vibrant cultural life and green space covering a quarter of the city. Warsaw will definitely exceed your expectations!
COPERNICUS SCIENCE CENTRE
Even though the Copernicus Science Centre represents a new type of institution in Poland, it has quickly earned recognition as one of the most interesting and most innovative centres of its kind in the world. It attracts interest not only among the public (taking in a grand total of nearly 4,500,000 visitors from when it first opened in November 2010 to March 2015), but also among the media and decision-makers.
HEAVENS OF COPERNICUS
The Heavens of Copernicus planetarium, which opened its doors in June 2011, is one of the most state-of-the-art multimedia planetariums in the world. By means of various types of activity bridging both science and art, it pursues the same mission as the Copernicus institution as a whole. The planetarium repertoire includes live astronomical shows, plus popular-science fulldome shows related to astronomy and other fields of science. Since June 2012, live 3D shows have also been screened. The planetarium likewise has its own graphic production studio, which is proud to have produced an award-winning fulldome show entitled "Dream to Fly”.
The Heavens of Copernicus is also a venue for the “Straight from the Sky” series of regularly organized meetings featuring experts on astronomy and astronautics. To mark such exceptional events as the landing of the Curiosity rover on Mars or the Philae probe on the surface of a comet, we invited everyone interested in space to come to the planetarium to watch and listen to real-time transmissions, music, and lectures by outstanding specialists, and even science fiction stories. Outdoor events like solar and lunar eclipses, the transit of Venus, the August skies, and the Perseid meteorites draw in thousands of observers.
The Heavens of Copernicus planetarium is visited by people of every age, by astronomy aficionados as well as by individuals who might not regularly think of themselves as interested in the subject. Since its opening, tickets to the Heavens of Copernicus have been purchased by more than 200,000 individuals each year.
3 DOMES IN ONE PLACE
The IPS conference is an event organized by planetarians for planetarians, focusing on everything planetarium-related. That is why IPS2016 will take place under the dome… and in fact under more than one! Our Heavens of Copernicus facility has a total of 140 seats and cannot accommodate additional projection equipment, for the duration of the conference we plan to set up two additional domes, 19 and 20 m in diameter. These will be “negative pressure domes” (geodesic domes) with topquality membranes. The domes will be equipped with air-conditioning, a floor, and comfortable seating, in other words everything necessary to ensure an excellent viewing experience. These domes will be set up in prestigious locations in the Discovery Park, the grounds that form part ofthe Copernicus Science Centre.
DOME VILLAGE & BOOTHS
During IPS 2016 we are also planning to launch a Dome Village, as garnered so many positive reviews during IPS2012. But we want to take things a step farther… and to utilize it not only as a place for sponsors to make commercial presentations of the latest products, but also as a venue for interesting, interactive workshops utilizing the state-of-the-art software and equipment assembled there. You will be able to meet the exhibitors at the stands and talk with all the sponsors during coffee breaks and other mini-events – what do you say to a speed-dating session with sponsors?
