The Ward Beecher Planetarium is a 145-seat planetarium located on the campus of Youngstown State University. The Planetarium has recently (in 2005) undergone a significant renovation, including the installation of a GOTO Chronos projector, a Spitz SciDome full dome visualization system, and upgrades to its sound and video systems. The facility is used by almost 1000 YSU students a year, and runs numerous public programs and school field trips programs throughout the year. 2009 June 30. The University of Texas at Arlington would like to announce a job opening for Astronomy Lab Supervisor.

Purpose of Position: The Lab Supervisor is resonsible for oversight of the development, supervision, presentation and training for the astronomy laboratories and planetarium based laboratories.

Essential functions Supervise astronomy labs. Manage operation and administration of lab, oversee equipment maintenance, and preparation of laboratory setups. Develop and implement new experiments and instructional lab planetarium activities. Support instructional programs associated with the astronomy laboratories. Maintain major instrumentation and equipment. Support lab section teaching activities and instruct/prepare teaching assistants, as required. Train and supervise student laboratory assistants. Collaborate with Planetarium Director in public outreach and functions of the planetarium. Maintain involvement in professional activities, including visits to McDonald Observatory, workshops, and related activities. Participation in activities related to the Planetarium.

Required qualifications Bachelor's degree. Astronomy laboratory experience. Computer programming competency. Ability to use standard office equipment, personal computer, Microsoft Office, and standard physics laboratory equipment. FUNCTION: The purpose is to play a leading role in the development, production and presentation of astronomy and other science related programs to a wide variety of audiences

JOB DUTIES: Responsible for technical production of programs the Planetarium presents to the public and to school audiences. Designs and produces computer graphics, photographs, slides, and digital special effects for Planetarium programs. Produces artwork related to brochures, news releases, and other public relations communications related to Planetarium shows. Coordinates illustration, special effects, and audio engineering for all programs. Assists in presentation of or presents public programs, including special group shows, light shows, astronomy sky watches, etc. telescope sessions. Administers stock procurement of Planetarium hardware, software, and consumables. Maintains the control system for Planetarium projector. Programs the Planetarium computer to control special effects projectors. Assists in the design, construction, and repair of telescope equipment and physics laboratories, and physics lecture demonstrations equipment. Supervises student technicians. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Equipment Operated: Planetarium projectors; (Chronos star projector, digital video and slide projectors, full- dome video, etc.) digital cameras and camera equipment; sound studio equipment; computers; hand and power tools; machine shop equipment; telescopes.

MAJOR WORKER CHARACTERISTICS: Knowledge of video production, cinematography or visual communications, University video programming policies, procedures, rules & regulations; public relations; interviewing. Skill in operations & maintenance of video production equipment (e.g., frame synchronizer; video switcher; digital video effects generator; video distribution amplifier; graphics/character generator computer; edit controller computer; stereo audio mixing consoled; digital audio/video/ graphics work station; media 100 system & non-linear digital editing system); computer hardware & software. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; use research methods in gathering data; prepare video productions; work alone on most tasks; edit & collate all source materials into video productions through use of computer hardware & software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated knowledge of basic astronomy, as evidenced by the successful completion of a college level astronomy course (or equivalent). A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Astronomy or Physics or another closely related field is preferred but not required.

The Physics and Astronomy Dept. of San Francisco State University
(http://www.physics.sfsu.edu/) seeks a full-time Astronomy Equipment
Technician and Demonstrator. The technician/demonstrator will play a
central role in the observatory, planetarium, and laboratory
facilities which support introductory courses, degree programs, and
outreach activities in astronomy.

The staff member will maintain and upgrade equipment in the
observatory, planetarium, and astronomy labs, and will train students
and lecturers in the operation of this equipment. These activities
support the astronomy instructional program at all levels, from
introductory courses to research students working in such areas as
extrasolar planets and galaxy formation. She/he will also be
instrumental in bringing on line and continuing operations of a
planned remote telescope facility. The technician will design and
construct demonstrations for astronomy labs and lectures in
consultation with faculty members, and will assist in incorporating
computer-based exercises into the curriculum. The technician/
demonstrator will prepare and present planetarium shows and will train
and supervise students who create and give shows. The new staff
member will maintain the observatory and planetarium web pages.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: BS or BA degree in physics, astronomy, engineering, or
closely related field. Work Experience: Equivalent of three years of
experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of astronomical,
optical, and/or audio/visual equipment including one year involving
design modifications and fabrication of technical equipment. Advanced
laboratory work in astronomy and physics can count toward this
required experience.
