The Planetarium Educator / Programmer has the responsibility for general public and school programming. Job Summary - Columbus State University, a comprehensive university within the University System of Georgia, invites applications for the position of Planetarium Producer for the Omnisphere Theater at Columbus State University‚s Coca-Cola Space Science Center (www.CCSSC.org). The CCSSC has three basic components, the Challenger Learning Center, the Omnisphere Theater (planetarium), and the Mead Observatory. The Omnisphere Theater is currently undergoing major renovations. Most notably, an Evans & Sutherland Digistar 3 LASER (8 watt) projection system is slated to be installed in the planetarium, in June 2006. This system is the most modern planetarium system in the world providing the versatility of full-dome video at ultra-high resolution. The theater is also equipped with the E&S Interactive system and an Omniscan Laser System. The Omnisphere also has a well equipped production studio including two high end 3D/compositing workstations, render farm and HD video production and editing capabilities. In addition the applicant will be required to work with other facets of the CCSSC to accomplish its primary educational mission. Minimum Qualifications - Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor‚s degree or equivalent experience in 3-D animation. Applicant must have an excellent working knowledge of Maya or 3D Studio Max. After Effects, multi-media, interactive design, video/audio production, planetarium, space art/animation, and exhibit design experience are additional skills desired but not required. The successful candidate must be able to work odd hours. Some weekend work will be necessary.
Salary Range - The salary is $40,000 annually with an excellent benefits package

PLANETARIUM MANAGER -- ID# 26173. `Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai`i. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the `Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai`i, located in Hilo, Hawai`i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds. Duties: Responsible for the delivery and oversight of educational programs in the planetarium, utilizing the technologies available in the facility. Duties include the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for all MKAEC planetarium audiences, including the development of new planetarium and audiovisual presentations that reflect an interdisciplinary connection to science and culture and other museum themes and subjects. Leads collaboration to engage UH-Hilo faculty and students and works with Executive Director and other MKAEC staff to enlist and involve expertise, talents, and resources of observatories operating on Mauna Kea. Additional duties include the supervision of all planetarium staff and volunteers, including staff training and evaluation; management, operation and maintenance of all planetarium equipment; management of the planetarium budget; and initiation and participation in revenue generating activities, such as fundraising and grant writing. Reports to the Executive Director. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Planetarium Science, science-related field, business, or education. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in astronomy or science plus three (3) years experience in teaching astronomy may substitute for Master's Degree. Experience: At least four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in planetarium, museum or entertainment management, including three years of administrative or supervisory responsibility and producing / adapting programs. Three (3) years minimum experience in teaching astronomy in classroom or planetarium environment. Experience working with children and general public. Experience in collaborating with other educators using the technology available. Abil/Know/Skills: Knowledge of planetarium systems, presentation, production, and maintenance. Knowledge of promotional techniques; teaching skills and content expertise in astronomy. Strong background in basic and naked-eye astronomy. Knowledge of current astronomical events and research in astronomy and space science. Technical expertise in operating and maintaining planetarium and AV equipment. Understanding of the K-12 learning standards (Hawai`i Department of Education desired) and how curriculum can be organized to teach to these standards. Working knowledge of computer systems. Demonstrated abilities in human relation. Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills. Effective communication skills, including oral and written communication and public speaking.
