Coordinator-Planetarium - PCN 114 - Waubonsie Valley High School. The Planetarium Coordinator is responsible for all duties pertaining to the operation and administration of the planetarium facility and all activities associated with it. - Prepares and delivers planetarium lessons to District 204 students, visiting groups, high school and adult astronomy clubs, etc. as guided by the curriculum, visiting groups, and the general public. A planetarium lesson includes but is not limited to live and taped planetarium programs, sky lectures, interpretation, outdoor talks and telescope observing sessions.
- Conducts outreach programs.
- Serves as curriculum advisor for the school district.
- Prepares, writes, produces, and adapts manuscripts and classroom activities for planetarium lessons.
- Installs all planetarium lessons for presentation.
- Prepares a yearly schedule of events and makes reservations with school district principals and outside groups, preparing tickets, etc., as required.
- Maintains relationships and correspondence with other planetariums.

Position Announcement: Flight Director for Challenger Learning Center of Greater Washington. This is a full time salaried position with benefits.

The Challenger Learning Center of Greater Washington (CLCGW) is seeking an enthusiastic educator to join our space flight simulation team. Responsibilities include presenting simulated space flight missions for grades 5 and up, facilitating professional development for area teachers, designing and teaching summer camp programs, and development of new programs. Opportunities beyond teaching programs are possible for applicants with backgrounds in planetarium show production, museum exhibit development, computer graphics development, audiovisual equipment installation/maintenance and scriptwriting.

CLCGW is located in Old Town Alexandria within walking distance of the historic shopping and dining district and Potomac River parks. It is a short 10 minute drive to the heart of Washington D.C. attractions including the Museums of the Smithsonian, National Zoo, area monuments, Civil War battlefields, Mount Vernon, National Archives, and many more.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Conduct programming for Challenger Learning Center of Greater Washington, including but not limited to mission simulations, adult programs, special events, camp programs and related activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct programming for CLCGW, including but not limited to mission simulations, VIP and adult programs and special events. Teach summer camp and actively participate in the implementation of new programs. Assist with delivery of professional development workshops and mission training programs

for teachers. Assist in the planning and development of program enhancements. Maintain simulator equipment and supplies. Maintain overall knowledge of CLCGW programs and a personal commitment to its goals and objectives. Other responsibilities as required to ensure the successful operation of the CLCGW.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelors degree in Education, Science or related field preferred. Experience presenting programs to audiences of various ages. Demonstrated effective communication skills. Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Familiarity with technology and computer-assisted instruction desired. Proven organizational skills and an ability to work in a team environment. Computer proficiency with MAC and PC platforms. Enthusiastic work ethic underscored by a commitment to quality.

PLANETARIUM PERFORMER & TECNICIAN

The Science Center of Connecticut is seeking a highly passionate and dynamic person to become a planetarium performer and technician in the Gengras Planetarium. This is a part-time position running planetarium shows, the occasional laser show, and performing maintenance on the planetarium's systems. Must be able to climb ladders and move large objects such as slide projectors, ladders, etc of up to 40 lbs.

Successful candidates will possess excellent multi-tasking skills, a basic knowledge of astronomy, experience working with the public, public speaking and/or acting skills, have good customer service, be mechanically inclined, and be comfortable working independently. Prior planetarium experience a plus; however, training on planetarium systems and performance will be provided.

Regular weekend and evening work required. Maintenance work hours can be flexible.

The Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City has an opening for an Education Program Specialist. This is a full time salaried position with Salt Lake County and includes an excellent benefits package. Starting salary is $2692/month.

The Education Program Specialist will work with the Education Manager to manage and coordinate a number of education programs, activities and projects. These would include outreach programs, in-house science demonstrations, planetarium theater programs, classes, lectures, teacher guides, etc. The Specialist will participate in the delivery of all education programs as well as train others to do the same.

This position will also be responsible in providing educational expertise and support to other departments within the planetarium. This would include assistance in researching planetarium show content and imagery, speaking with the media, presenting lectures, exhibits tours, and responding to astronomical inquiries.

COORDINATOR OF ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS, CLEVELAND, OH USA

A professional level researcher/presenter responsible to the Director of
Education to direct and supervise all astronomy staff and programming.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    Coordinate and evaluate all astronomy programs associated with the Shafran
    Planetarium and Ralph Mueller Observatory
  • Supervise and evaluate astronomy staff. Responsible for the overall
    direction and implementation of astronomy programs.
  • Plan, develop and present live astronomy programs for school, museum
    members, and the public.
  • Obtain and administer grants from private foundations, federal government
    and private corporations or institutions.
  • Serve as a part time lecturer/instructor through the Physics Department in
    the SAGES program at Case Western Reserve University.
  • Keep abreast of current knowledge in astronomy/astrophysics research and
    education and new advances in planetarium equipment. Engage in research
    collaborations with CERCA (Center for Education & Research in Cosmology
    and Astrophysics, Case Western Reserve University)
  • Develop and oversee a maintenance schedule for all Shafran Planetarium

  • Collaborate with universities, local astronomy groups, schools and the
    media to maintain the high profile of the Shafran Planetarium and
    continued visibility of CMNH astronomy programs. Continue to grow
    astronomy education and utilize the potential of the Shafran Planetarium.
  • Cooperate with Education Division staff, other Museum Divisions, societies
    and public groups in astronomy-related topics as time permits.
  • Develop, produce and maintain Astronomy budget. Budget goals developed
    with Planetarium, Observatory and Astronomy Programs Coordinators.
  • Maintain professional conduct at all times with Museum staff and the
    public.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with Museum staff and public
    groups in a professional, pleasant, tactful and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to develop, organize and execute a wide variety of exciting
    educational activities for groups in varied settings.
  • Performs all duties according to established museum operating, safety, and
    environmental and quality policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Manager or Management
  • Education and/or Experience:
    Advanced degree or equivalent experience in astronomy, physics or
    planetarium education with a minimum of five years‚ experience.

PLANETARIUM DIRECTOR, TULSA, OK USA

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Leading the implementation of all on-site and outreach programs and exhibits including development or acquisition of innovative, educational and entertaining planetarium programs that meet the community needs, while utilizing the full capabilities of the 110 seat 50 foot domed Planetarium and Theater.

All aspects of fiscal management and accountability of the planetarium, including oversight of an aggressive fund-raising program, procurement of grants and corporate underwriting, and marketing to educational institutions and other possibilities for utilizing the planetarium and theater.

Leading curriculum development and program coordination, developing alliances with educational and professional organizations, K-12 and post secondary public and private education, other community and state partners to secure educational and financial support fostering high quality/high value programs.

Staffing and management of all positions.

Oversight and maintenance of physical facilities and technology.

Establishing goals, standards, policies and procedures for successful implementation of all TASM programs in response to direction provided by the Executive Director and TASM Board.

Minimum requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a field of Physical Science, Education, Museum Management, Business Administration, Computer Science or a related field and five years of related experience. Two years experience in planetarium operation is minimum.

Operational understanding of the projection systems, lighting systems, computer systems and a working knowledge of astronomy. Must be familiar with interactive instructional media and distance education technologies, participation in professional organizations supporting astronomy is desirable.

This position will report to the Executive Director of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum.

The East Kentucky Science Center and Planetarium has an opening for a full time Science Center / Planetarium Technician. ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, PLANETARIUM, RENO, NV USA

The University of Nevada, Reno, is now accepting applications for the position of Associate Director of Fleischmann Planetarium. The planetarium is forty years old, and enjoys a good reputation in the surrounding community. It has a 30-foot dome, housing a Digistar projector; all-sky and panorama systems; and a six-channel sound system.

Fleischmann Planetarium was the first planetarium to project large-format films on its dome, and currently uses an 8/70 projection system. It also has a small museum and a thriving gift shop. There are four full time staff members at present, including the Associate Director. The planetarium is a department of the   university. Current plans are to help integrate the planetarium and science center with the activities of the university and to make it as serviceable to the community as possible.

The University of Nevada, Reno, Fleischmann   Planetarium and Science Center, is seeking candidates for a full-time administrative faculty position. Duties include the daily and timely operation of the planetarium, production and technical operations of   all public and educational programs, supervising and training staff, as well as serving as planetarium spokesperson. ASTRONOMY EDUCATOR, SAN FRANCISCO, CA USA

The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) in San Francisco, California is hiring a full-time Astronomy Educator to join a team of National Science Foundation funded partners researching a professional development and community building program for educators at small science museums and nature centers.

Responsibilities:

Lead the development and production of a suite of hands-on activities and tailored to the needs of museum and nature center educators (includes formative testing sessions). Assist with the development of training protocols and agendas and help train participants at onsite workshops nationally (some travel required). Assist with the adaptation of activities for distance learning and online training protocols. Moderate distance learning and online workshop sessions and discussions. Assist project evaluators with formative and summative data collection as required. Assist with recruitment of workshop participants. Attend weekly ASP team meetings and take part in monthly project team teleconferences. Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelor‚s degree in the sciences (astronomy preferred) AND three years in informal education and outreach; OR a Bachelor‚s degree in the sciences, three years demonstrated work in informal education/outreach, and strong content knowledge in astronomy. Experience developing and/or adapting hands-on astronomy activities. Excellent interpersonal skills, public speaking abilities, and an enthusiastic/positive personality. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Solid computer skills (including Word, Excel, e-mail, World Wide Web). Ability to multi-task and be creative (i.e., think out of the   box when necessary). Comfortable working under more than one supervisor and open to diverse job assignments. Strong command of written and spoken English.

Desired Qualifications: Two years work experience at a science museum, science center, natural history museum, nature center, or equivalent delivering educational programming. Strong knowledge of inquiry-based learning. Experience with distance/online learning (development experience highly desired).

Salary: $35-38,000 per year (based on experience)
