International Planetarium Society
THE INTERNATIONAL PLANETARIUM SOCIETY is the global association of planetarium professionals. Its nearly 700 members come from 35 countries around the world. They represent schools, colleges and universities, museums, and public facilities of all sizes including both fi xed and portable planetariums.
THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THE SOCIETY IS TO encourage the sharing of ideas among its members through conferences, publications, and networking. By sharing their insights and creative work, IPS members become better planetarians.
IPS MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN TO ANYONE interested in planetariums. Members include directors, teachers, technicians, writers, artists, media specialists, presenters, vendors, scientists, students, and sponsors and friends of the planetarium dome and its starry sky.
MORE THAN 20 REGIONAL AND NATIONAL planetarium associations from around the world are affi liated with IPS. Representatives from those affi liates, together with the elected offi cers, make up the Executive Council, the ruling body of the organization. IPS was founded in 1970.
IPS MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN TO ANYONE interested in planetariums. IPS membership is renewable annually and starts at the nearest quarter year.
INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS RECEIVE the benefi ts listed above. Dues are US$50 for one year or US$90 for two years.
INSTITUTIONAL MEMBERS RECEIVE the benefi ts listed above, a handsome plaque, the right to bring multiple staff to IPS conferences, and can request an IPS membership list on mailing labels. Dues are US$200 for the fi rst year and US$100 annually thereafter.
CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP IS DESIGNED for vendors. Contact the Membership Chair for a list of current benefi ts and dues.

Benefits of Membership
IPS members receive the colorful quarterly journal, Planetarian, fi lled with insightful articles and a wide range of feature columns and other items.
Biennial IPS conferences bring together hundreds of planetarium professionals for paper sessions, invited speakers, workshops, panel discussions, vendor demonstrations and exhibits. Recent conferences have met in Cocoa Beach (USA), Osaka (Japan), London (UK), Montréal (Canada), and Wichita (USA).
All members receive proceedings of IPS conferences containing texts of most contributed and invited papers and panel discussions.
Recent free volumes include a mythology booklet, a guide to special effects projectors, a portable planetarium handbook, and an astronomical songbook.
Discounted subscription rates to the IPS video compilations, which deliver still images and extensive video footage from NASA, ESA, & the Space Telescope.

IPS Resource Directory
The planetarium directory is a comprehensive catalog of planetariums and planetarians worldwide. The resource directory is a "yellow pages" listing hundreds of companies and organizations providing services to the planetarium community.
Members-only web resources
Current versions of the IPS directories are available in a members-only area on the IPS web site
A members-only listserve that distributes summaries of current astronomical news releases and other items pertinent to IPS members.
Volunteering for IPS
IPS has many committees devoted to areas of interest for the membership. Among these are the Publications, Portable Planetariums, Media, Outreach, Language, Web, and Technology committees. Volunteers for committees are recruited by the respective chairs from the membership; hence, members can actively shape the future of IPS and the planetarium profession.
