During IPS2012, we will showcase the best that south Louisiana has to offer in the worlds of science, culture and technology by offering optional tours to LIGO Livingston, the LITE facility, or the French Quarter in New Orleans. All three tours will take place concurrently on Tuesday, 24 July, and delegates may choose to attend one for a $35 fee. There are a limited number of spaces for each tour.
LIGO - Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Obs
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, or LIGO, in Livingston, Louisiana is one of only two observatories in the United States currently working to detect gravitational waves. Each end of the “L” shaped detector is 4 km in length! In addition to touring the control room and other behind-the-scenes areas of the observatory, you can also play a little in their new Science Education Center, which features over 40 hands-on interactive exhibits designed by the Exploratorium. This tour is limited to 55 attendees.
LITE - Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise
Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise (LITE) is a 3-D immersive visualization and high-performance computing resource center hosting clients in commercial industry, government and university sectors. LITE’s leading-edge facility features a comprehensive set of advanced visualization systems including one of the world’s largest 3-D visualization theatres and one of the world’s first multi-user six-sided digital 3-D total immersive space (TIS) based on CAVE ® technologies. This tour is limited to 55 attendees.
What would a trip to south Louisiana be without a visit to New Orleans? Explore the city on your own, or with a group of your friends. From the hustle and bustle of Bourbon Street to the quiet calm of the French Quarter’s many nooks and crannies, the Crescent City truly offers something for everyone. Museums, antique shops, fine cuisine, parks, historic properties and much more await! This tour is limited to 110 attendees.
