IPS Ad Hoc Committee:

Technology Committee

Function: To monitor and investigate existing and emerging technologies that have or may have an impact on planetariums, and to communicate on these matters to the IPS membership.

Technology is only a tool. We've heard that said many times, but sometimes it gets lost in the debate over whether we should use this or that new technology. The original Zeiss Planetarium projector was once a new technology. Bottom line is that as planetarians we want to be able to do a better job presenting Astronomy and Science. For some, it is classroom teaching; for others it is outreach and public education. But no matter how we use our planetariums, we will utilize some sort of technology. It's up to us to figure out what we want to do and how best to do it. The tools available keep changing—getting better, for the most part. We know the advance of digital technology in the planetarium field is happening at a fast pace and many professionals can be bewildered by it all. The Technology Committee aims to educate planetarians so they (not the committee) can best decide what technologies to use in their theaters. If you know what is out there, what it can and can't do, then you are in a better place to decide which tools are best for you.

Committee Report:

Update Nov 2009:

The Technology Committee is working on a project to begin cataloging the plethora of terms we encounter in the planetarium field. Planetarium technology is rapidly advancing, and new terminology is often confusing. At the same time, new planetarians are often unfamiliar with the traditional jargon of the planetarium field. The Glossary Project on which this committee is working will organize and define new and old terms so that IPS members will be able to communicate more effectively. Look to these web pages every so often for additions to our collection of terms.

The Technology Committee welcomes volunteers! Please e-mail the committee chairperson if you would like to work on the project, or even if you have a suggestion related to our work.
