Mars pan, bolide projector

Sixteen million years ago a large asteroid

slammed into the surface of Mars and blew

itself to smithereens.   The explosion was so

powerful it threw a small rock lying on the

surface out into space.   Mars had been

home to the little rock for billion of years,

but now it became one of billions of

asteroids traveling around the sun in the

cold, dark, vacuum of space.

For the next 16 million years the rock, so

small it could fit into a human hand, circled

the sun. Chance brought the small rock near

Earth. It was caught in Earth's gravitational

field and pulled down to the surface.
