Mars pan, bolide projector |
Sixteen million years ago a large asteroid
slammed into the surface of Mars and blew
itself to smithereens. The explosion was so
powerful it threw a small rock lying on the
surface out into space. Mars had been
home to the little rock for billion of years,
but now it became one of billions of
asteroids traveling around the sun in the
cold, dark, vacuum of space.

For the next 16 million years the rock, so
small it could fit into a human hand, circled
the sun. Chance brought the small rock near
Earth. It was caught in Earth's gravitational
field and pulled down to the surface.
