Data to Dome
Share |

Data to Dome is an initiative or project of the IPS Science Data & Visualization Task Force to make it easier to visualize scientific data in a planetarium. "Data to Dome" as a broad IPS led initiative should not be confused with "data2dome" which refers to the ESO led data standard that we consider a part of the larger Data to Dome vision.

Data to Dome Tutorials, Workshops, Standards and Datasets:

Data2Dome is an effort of the European Southern Observatory (ESO; It uses a content distribution and publishing standard aimed at bringing astronomy data seamlessly into planetarium systems real-time. This is an excellent example of project that can support the IPS Data to Dome effort of the IPS Science & Data Visualization Task Force

It allows data providers to publish news and information "feeds" which may be accessed directly via planetarium software. The vision is that every day, planetarium presenters can access a menu to select fresh news, datasets, sky event data, historical event data and more. For examples see the ESO Data2Dome Project page.

Data2Dome can describe the contents of a "JSON" document—basically a "machine readable" version of a web page. Data2Dome will expand beyond ESO with providers such as ESA, JSST, and AstroPix (7,000+ images).

ESO is currently providing these feeds: Images (rectangular, spherical, and hemispherical/allsky), Video (rectangular, spherical, along with fulldome clips and shows), and Audio. ESO plans to provide feeds for Astronomical Events and 3D Models. The "Events" feed is of particular interest. The ESO staff have curated 600+ events for 2017, with the intention that they will continue to update and expand the events feed year after year.

* D2D is an ESO project, distinct from the IPS Data to Dome project, though their respective goals overlap significantly.
