Facts & Tips

Area 517 km2

Population 1,724,404 individuals

Time zone

Warsaw lies within the Central European Time Zone (GMT +1), with summer time from March to the end of October (GMT +2).

Climate

Warsaw’s climate is humid continental (Koppen Dfb) with relatively cold winters and mild summers.
The average temperature is −5°C (27°F) in February and 18°C (66.7°F) in June. Temperatures may often reach 30°C (86°F) in the summer and –20°C (–4°F) in winter.

Currency

The currency in Poland is the Polish złoty (abbreviated as “PLN” or “zł”), which is subdivided into 100 groszy.

Electricity

The Polish power supply has a voltage of 230V with a frequency of 50 Hz. Standard two-pole Europlugs are used.

Embassies

All countries with whom Poland holds diplomatic relations have embassies in Warsaw.

Prohibitions

In Warsaw smoking is prohibited at all public transportation stops and shelters as well as all clubs, pubs and restaurants unless they have a separate room for smokers. There is a fine for not respecting this.

Moreover, alcohol may not be consumed in public places (parks, squares, streets, etc.), with the exception of specially permitted areas such as gardens and patios in restaurants and pubs. There is a fine for not respecting this as well.

Getting around Warsaw

The Copernicus Science Centre is situated in the very heart of the city, therefore travelling on foot is the best way to experience the city's atmosphere. Reaching other, often distant parts of the city is easier by public transport, with convenient links to any location within Warsaw as well as further afield – to the city's suburbs. Public transport in Warsaw consists of myriad bus, tram, and metro connections and enables passengers to navigate the city comfortably and swiftly 24h a day. Many public transport vehicles are well-adjusted to accommodate the disabled.

The metro system in Warsaw now consists of two lines. The Copernicus Science Centre is fortunate to have its own station (called “Centrum Nauki Kopernik”) along the route of the newer line, proudly opened in March 2015, connecting the east and west of the city. The other, longer line connects the northern and southern parts of the city.

Taxis in Warsaw are best ordered by phone, and generally arrive very promptly. Here is a list of the city's official "radio-taxi" companies, recommended for use.

Using your own car in Warsaw can be somewhat troublesome (as in any city), especially in the city centre, where a pay-and-display parking zone has been introduced.
